Tsvangirai Recovering, But Devastated By Loss Wife

Doctors attending to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai are satisfied with his recovery process after the car crash on Friday which killed his wife, Susan. MDC officials said Tsvangirai might be released from hospital this weekend.

It has emerged that Susan was flung out of the car as it rolled over and it's suspected the vehicle landed on top of her. Rescuers found her 15 metres from the wrecked vehicle, mortally wounded with serious internal injuries and fractures to both legs. She was rushed to Beatrice hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body is now at Nyaradzo funeral parlour, in Herbert Chitepo road Harare. Mourners are gathered at Tsvangirai's Avondale home. The couple had been married for 31 years and have six children.

Tsvangirai's driver Simbarashe Mujeyi was also seriously injured in the crash, but his condition has been described as stable. His aide, Benson 'Okolo' Muchineuta, was also injured. They are all being treated at the Avenues Clinic in Harare.

Tsvangirai's car was part of a three vehicle convoy that was headed towards Murambinda in Buhera, when it was involved in a collision with a haulage truck just after Beatrice, 52 km south of Harare.

An MDC MP told us people are not convinced it was an accident, even though the driver of the truck said he lost control after falling asleep behind the wheel. The truck, which was heading towards Harare, encroached on to the other lane, forcing the lead vehicle in Tsvangirai's convoy to veer off the road to avoid a collision.

The MP said Tsvangirai's driver also tried to get out of harm's way, but it was late. The truck crushed the right hand side of the vehicle, behind the driver, forcing Tsvangirai's landcruiser off the road. It then rolled three times. The driver of truck was reportedly taken into custody by the police on Friday. As he is the key to this accident it is worrying that his whereabouts at the moment are still not know.

Tsvangirai, who turns 57 on Tuesday, had long been under threat of death from groups loyal to Mugabe. In 1997 an unidentified gang tried to throw him from a 10th floor office window, and in 2007 he was admitted to hospital with serious injuries, after a brutal assault by police at a prayer rally.

Senior MDC officials in Harare are refusing to speculate on the cause of the crash, but Tendai Biti, the party' secretary general, said they will call for an independent probe into the accident that killed Susan. Biti told journalists in Harare at a press conference on Saturday that the late Susan was a mother not only to the Tsvangirai family, but also to the party and the nation.

'She was a pillar of strength. The decisions the party took sometimes had the refining wisdom that came from Mrs Tsvangirai,' said Biti.

'She was always there for the President and for the party. The accident took place within a context of joy and celebration. The MDC President celebrates his 57th birthday on Tuesday.' Broke down several times during the press conference.

He said the accident could have been avoided if Tsvangirai had been provided with a police escort.

'Logic would have demanded that police escort be provided to the Prime Minister, to warn other traffic, and this tragedy could have been avoided."
